DREW MEHRINGER

Tight Ends

Drew Mehringer joined Dan Lanning’s inaugural coaching staff at Oregon as the tight ends coach on January 4, 2022. He is known as one of the nation’s top recruiters after helping Texas and Houston bring in the top classes in their conferences.

“Drew is one of the top young offensive minds in college football with an impressive history coaching multiple different positions,” Lanning said at the time of the hiring. “He was once the youngest play caller in the Power 5, and that experience will be very beneficial as we develop our offense. Our student-athletes are going to love working with Coach Mehringer and will learn a ton from him both as football players and as young men."

Mehringer came to Eugene after spending a year as the quarterbacks coach at New Mexico and the co-offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic. He also was the offensive coordinator at Rutgers and James Madison, implementing new schemes at both schools. Mehringer started his career as a graduate assistant at Iowa State and Ohio State.

A native of Mansfield, Texas, Mehringer attended Rice as a quarterback before suffering a career-ending injury. He then served as a student assistant with the quarterbacks for three seasons, graduating in 2010 with a degree in political science.

New Mexico (2021)
Prior to joining the Ducks, Mehringer served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at New Mexico. A series of injuries at quarterback forced five Lobos into action at the position during the 2021 season. Preseason starter Terry Wilson was only able to play in six games, but he did surpass 1,000 passing yards while tossing seven touchdowns. Despite the injuries at quarterback, Mehringer helped the team improve its win total from the previous two seasons.

Florida Atlantic (2020)
Before moving back west to work at New Mexico, Mehringer was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Florida Atlantic. The Owls went undefeated at home and earned a berth in the Montgomery Bowl. T.J. Chase led a balanced FAU receiving corps with 334 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Five Owls caught at least ten passes and all five surpassed 100 yards in the team’s run-heavy offense.

Texas (2017-19)
Prior to taking the co-offensive coordinator position at Florida Atlantic, Mehringer spent three seasons with Tom Herman at Texas as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. He coached three All-Big 12 receivers with the Longhorns and two of his pass-catchers were selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. Texas went 25-15 during Mehringer’s three seasons on the Forty Acres, reaching three bowl games including the 2018 Sugar Bowl.

On the recruiting trail, Mehringer ranked as the Big 12’s top recruiter and the No. 3 recruiter in the nation for the 2019 class according to 247Sports. During the 2018 season, he was the No. 11 recruiter in the league.

In 2019. Mehringer coached Devin Duvernay to first-team All-Big 12 honors after placing fifth nationally with 1,386 receiving yards. Duvernay and Collin Johnson were both selected in the 2020 NFL Draft after the season. Johnson was one of Mehringer’s most productive Longhorns with both his career receptions (188) and receiving yards (2,624) ranking among the top-ten in school history.

In 2018, Mehringer coached a deep receiver room that featured Duvernay, Johnson and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention choice Lil’Jordan Humphrey. Humphrey had 86 catches for 1,176 yards (third-most in school history) and nine touchdowns, Johnson had 68 catches for 985 yards and seven TDs, while Duvernay had 41 receptions for 546 yards and four touchdowns. Humphrey and Johnson were one of the most prolific pass-catching duos in Longhorn football history, as their 2,161 combined yards ranked second for a single season.

In 2017, Mehringer’s group was led by underclassmen. Johnson led the group with 54 catches for 765 yards and two touchdowns. He became just the 24th player in school history to reach 50 catches in a season. Humphrey garnered honorable mention All-Big 12 honors with 37 catches for 431 yards and a touchdown, while senior Armanti Foreman finished with a team-best four touchdown receptions.

Rutgers (2016)
Mehringer moved to Texas after spending the 2016 season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rutgers where, at age 28, he was the youngest play caller in the Power Five conferences and worked to install a new offensive system under first-year head coach Chris Ash. Offensive lineman Tariq Cole earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention accolades.

Houston (2015)
In his lone season with Houston, Mehringer helped the Cougars win 13 games and the American championship as the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.  The Cougars played in the Peach Bowl, beating No. 9 Florida State 38-24.  Houston ended the year ranked No. 8 in the CFP Rankings, bolstered by an offense that ranked 20th nationally in yardage and 10th in scoring (40.4 points per game).  Four of Mehringer’s receivers recorded at least 25 catches, including first-team All-AAC wideout Demarcus Ayers.

As the recruiting coordinator for the class of 2016, Mehringer helped the Cougars pull in the No. 36 class in the country and the top class in the AAC according to 247Sports. The group featured Ed Oliver, the No. 6 player in the nation who went on to be drafted in the first round by the Buffalo Bills.

James Madison (2014)
Prior to arriving in Houston, Mehringer spent the 2014 season at James Madison as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. While at JMU, the Dukes advanced to the FCS Playoffs for just the second time in the previous six years. The offense ranked 10th nationally with 484.6 yards per game behind the arm of junior quarterback Vad Lee, who was named third-team All-American by the Associated Press and received the Bill Dudley Award, given to the best collegiate football player in Virginia.

JMU also set single-season program records in several categories including yards (6,300), first downs (315) and passing touchdowns (30). Lee set single-season James Madison records in passing completions (282), attempts (465), yards (3,462), touchdowns (30) and total offense (4,288 yards). He threw for more than 300 yards in five contests and had a streak of six games with at least 250 passing yards.

Ohio State (2012-13)
Mehringer worked with Ohio State’s tight ends and wide receivers in his first season as a graduate assistant before working with the offensive line in his second season in Columbus. With Mehringer’s assistance, offensive tackle Jack Mewhort was named second-team All-America in 2013 and first-team All-Big Ten. Corey Linsley and Andrew Norwell also earned first-team All-Big Ten honors as the Ohio State offense broke 12 single-season records. Mewhort and Lindsley were selected in the second and fifth rounds, respectively, of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Iowa State (2010-11)
Mehringer began his career with two seasons as a graduate assistant at Iowa State, where he worked with the wide receivers. During his time in Ames, receiver Aaron Horne was named the 2011 Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Horne reeled in 39 passes for 431 yards to earn the award.
